Does sha256ing a longer string take more time?

Some people say that augmenting block size would need more cpu power and therefore will centralise mining. Is that really true? (I'm still quite sure that it doesn't centralise verifying, since that takes much less time and power). I have no degree in math or computer science (still in high school) and don't have much idea how these algorithms work. And also is it more difficult to find the right end characters for bigger strings (so that the hash has so many 0s in the beginning)? What other things have I forgot to consider? Thanks for your help!
