African cryptocurrency exchange Africrypt has gone down a while ago in April. The exchanges 69k(nice) BTC have been practically untracable with the use of mixers. It has now become clear that this is most likely a BTC heist, with no trace of the founders of the exchange.
Owners Ameer and Raees Cajee told investors last April that they would have been hacked, but not to warn authorities as it would slow down the reclamation process. Employees and users of Africrypt were excluded from the platform last April as well.
The case has been transferred to an elite-unit of the South Africa Police. The financial authorities in South Africa are not planning to do anything about it as Bitcoin isn't a recognized financial product.
If they really ran off with the BTC, it would be (one of) the biggest in cryptocurrency history, with a market value of over 2.5 billion dollars, closing in on 4 billion at the time Africrypt went offline.
