According to the U.S. Geological Survey, about 187,000 metric tons of gold have been recovered from the earth so far and another 57,000 metric tons in proven reserves.
Additionally, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there are approximately 18,000,000 metric tons of gold suspended in seawater. With current technology, recovering this gold is not economically viable.
You will notice that I used words like about and approximately in describing these amounts. More gold can be discovered, and someday even asteroids will be mined for so-called precious metals like gold.
Despite the uncertainty around the gold supply; we know, without a shadow of a doubt, that there will only and forever be 21,000,000 $BTC.
