A student from the University of Indonesia with the initials AAB killed his fellow classmate MNZ last Wednesday after suffering losses in cryptocurrency trading.

Police explained that AAB (23) killed MNZ (19) to settle a debt from an online loan (online lending platform) after suffering losses in cryptocurrency trading in the victim's boarding house in Depok on Wednesday (2/8/2023). AAB is suspected of intending to steal MNZ's belongings due to being burdened by the online loan debt.

AAB is said to have repeatedly stabbed MNZ in the chest and neck as he was about to leave. AAB then placed MNZ's body in a plastic bag and hid it under the bed.

As a result of his actions, AAB is charged under Article 340 and/or Article 338 and/or Article 365 of the Indonesian Penal Code (KUHP), with the maximum penalty being the death penalty.

Police stated that there were no belongings of the victim in the room. The victim's family then searched the room and found a black plastic bag containing the body of their relative.

The Deputy Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit (Wakasatreskrim) of the Depok Police, AKP Nirwan Pohan, mentioned that AAB had incurred losses of up to Rp 80 million in cryptocurrency investments. Following that, the perpetrator sought money from online loans before ultimately getting involved with MNZ.

As reported by CNBC Indonesia, AAB admitted to not having any personal grudge against MNZ. He carried out this act out of desperation, having tried various methods, with the final one being killing MNZ."
