After playing Axie infinity for 45 days, is it profitable?

I was curious for myself if I had actually made some money playing the game so I did some calculations and thought it might be interesting to share.

I started just playing to earn SLP with my starting team and moved into also breeding and flipping axies. I'm currently up about half an Ethereum (1850 USD) in total value compared to all the money i threw into the game, which so far has been about 2500 in USD. I'm on track to have doubled my investment by the end of this month.

So how does one make money with Axie Infinity? The answer is mostly breeding. SLP earned by just playing is not much. Even when you have 10 Axies, which doubles your earning rate, you will only be earning about 23 dollars a day for 2.5 hours of work. Sure its earned while gaming, but it won't make you rich.

Breeding is where the fat money is made. A succesful breed earns me about 180-250 dollars after accounting for costs. When a breed fails it will generally be somewhere between break even and 50 dollars profit. I just started scaling up from 4 breeds per month to 8, and assuming about 80% of breeds turn out succesful thats a nice chunk of side earnings for a student.

With enough game knowledge flipping axies also becomes a nice bonus. Ive come across plenty of axies that were just obviously underpriced, leading to an easy 60 usd profit for no effort whatsoever.

The game is a risky investment for sure, and I'm not going to tell anyone to chuck money in. But from my experience the profits are still there, and I'm having fun which is probably most important.
