Original post. Something seems off with the website. The Wikipedia article they source does not seem to indicate the wealth share the top 0.001% own. 0.73 BTC per ultra-rich person seemed way too low so I went ahead and computed it myself.
My source is this one. "UHNWIs constitute only 0.003% of the world's population and hold 13% of the world's total wealth." Inequality got even worse since Covid but this should be about right. Note that UHNWI are defined as people holding more than 30m USD worth of wealth.
My computation:
21 million * 13% / (8 billion * 0.003%) = 11.375 BTC
So we get 11.375 BTC per ultra high net worth individual, if it was distributed evenly amongst them. This is much larger than what is stated on the website even when taking the top .003% instead of the top .001% (which are richer)
Let me know if you think I made a mistake or if you found a different source for the wealth share of ultra rich individuals. In any case, I think this is a fascinating topic even if very hypothetical!
UPDATE: I did the same for millionaires instead of ultra-rich people. According to this, the ~60m millionaires of the world own ~46% of the wealth. If 60m people owned the same share of 46% of the total bitcoin supply, they would each own:
21 million * 46% / 60 million = 0.161 BTC. (This would again be even lower when taking lost coins into account)
