An (stupid?) idea: What if Ethereum fees were collected directly from your public address?

Hi!

TLDR: this seems to be a really bad idea and couldn't add any real benefit. Thank you for sharing your thought! Some people tend to see taxes are basic Communism but it's OK, I see the technical and socio-economical limitations of this approach in a decentralized network. Thanks

When talking Ethereum gas fees in this sub, I explained it as some kind of "tax" the user has to pay in order to operate in a economic area (= make transactions). This is an over-simplification and this analogy is not perfect, but that's not my point. It made me think about another way to collect fees in the Ethereum ecosystem.

What if, instead of collecting all fees in each transaction, "gas" fees were collected regularly from each public address? Therefore, - at a regular basis (each x new block or epoch or any other point in time), some fees would be collected from public addresses that hold ETH ; - the amount of fees to be collected would be calculated based on a specific algorithm (on the Consensus or Execution layer) ; - Gas fees could still be included in some complex or computation-intensive transactions (e.g. complex transactions such as contracts deployment or some complex interactions with smart contracts) ; - In order to limit spamming, a small part of gas fees could still be paid on each transaction ; - People would be "taxed" based on their previous activity. "Tax evasion" would be prevented because even if you send your ETH to another address, this new address will be taxed anyway at some point. People could bridge their tokens to avoid tax but this kind of transaction could require gas fees (see my previous points about gas fees for complex transactions)

My concerns: - The computation would be very high. I donΒ΄t know if it could be done more efficiently. - It could be very complex to design the algorithm, in order to be "fair" and efficient for the whole ecosystem (basically, users who heavily utilize the system should pay more) .

There are probably a lot of concerns about it but I'd like to have your opinion on the limitations or benefits of a such idea.

Thanks for your toughts!
