I am curious how people outside of cryptocurrency forums feel about Bitcoin these days. In the past, Bitcoin has been viewed mostly as a tool for criminals to transact anonymously. While I still see this mentioned on occasion, it seems most people now know the truth about bitcoin and anonymity which is that it is actually super traceable and rather difficult to remain anonymous if you actually want to use bitcoin to purchase things in the open world.
Now, however, anytime I see bitcoin or cryptocurrency mentioned anywhere other than a crypto-related forum(such as r/finance, r/Futurology, r/politics), it's being bashed for destroying the environment. This really blows my mind because it's quite simple to expose the FUD here - bitcoin miners want the cheapest power and the cheapest power is renewable. Bitcoin is, and will continue, pushing renewable energy forward. Yet anytime I mention this, I get downvoted into oblivion.
I don't get out much, is this the general sentiment everywhere or just a reddit thing?
