I hear a lot of people say that the introduction of CBDCs will drive mass adoption of Bitcoin as people will reject the programmable and surveillable natures of such currencies.
But wouldn't these very characteristics of CBDCs allow governments to stop people buying Bitcoin? After all, what are you going to buy the Bitcoin with? With a centrally controlled currency, the government could pass a law banning Bitcoin and enforce that law by programming the new currency to not purchase Bitcoin and to surveil any attempts to do so.
