Welp. Finally happened. I was in the wrong headspace at the right time. (Preface I have a chronic illness and haven’t been feeling good for a few days. Out of it. Zonked. Foggy headed). Got a notification that my coinbase account changed AND my google account is being changed.
Said no and denied both and then the phone call. Should have know better but the guy knew a ton of my details.
Long story short he convinced me my entire crypto across multiple account was all in danger because of this hack attempt.
So I walk through how to setup a coinbase wallet. Don’t give anything to anyone and yet somehow they found a way to nab what they needed.
Watched as all my money (nervously and safely) moved to said wallet. Took a sigh of relief and then watch it all disappear the next day.
I’m gutted. I lost my job awhile back and have been on the mend and now this. Wife’s cool with it but I’m fuming.
Talked to coinbase and they can’t do a thing and I’m supposed to go to law enforcement, but other googles pretty much say that “she’s dead jim”.
It wasn’t a fortune but it was years of hard work and small savings down the drain in one dumb cotton headed scared choice.
Mostly mad at myself.
Edit #1: some of you wanted more details to see if I can learn what I did wrong. The first one was I got a phone call from someone claiming they worked for coinbase. I said I set up an account but don’t use it. My funds are in swan. He said oh they all “work” together so your account there could be compromised and we should move it.
He mentioned if I had a wallet I said no. I intended to get a ledger someday. It hadn’t gotten that far. He very professionally and politely offered to help me set one up.
Walked me through the app the find and then I went into the app and copied a bitcoin address inside the app that I then linked to Swan. He only had me confirm the last 4 digits of that address so I didn’t “send it somewhere wrong”. They were correct and then to be sure I only sent a small amount and it worked.
I never shared my passphrase or the entire address to the wallet.
He then said he found someone else in the account and just needed to disconnect the wallet and deny access and that’s where they asked me to log into google and I gave them access. They said it was taken care of and done.
Moved over the rest of my funds to “be safe” and everything was good for a day. Then poof all of it was gone. So I can only imagine it was the google thing somehow.
