Hey guys, I'm the guy who runs crypto for the homeless. So far, we've been operating for ~4 years now and I wanted to share some of my experience with the project and our goals for next year/the future.
First - CFTHL is an organization I started entirely on reddit's support while I was in pharmacy school. The primary goal was to do something interesting with crypto that would also help people that I could do on my own terms/pace. Due to reddit's support, we thrived and became an official 501c3 organization with nearly 10,000 meals DELIEVERED to homeless people all over the world.
The way we operate is that we crowd fund crypto using our various images/posts and then we reimburse volunteers for buying and handing out goods/foods to the homeless/needy all over the world. Since it's using crypto, we can easily reimburse no matter where the volunteer is located.
Make no mistake - this is NOT a trust-less system, but I doubt anything with any complexity can truly be. However, we have documented every single food delivery (with receipts) via photos and also have a spreadsheet where we document all donations and spending down to the penny. We have MORE documentation than any other non-profit/charity and I stand by that until proven otherwise (yes we have nearly 4 full years of images on imgur/our site/social media).
Take a look at some of our best work: https://i.imgur.com/9W9cXjU.jpg
Each year I try to make it a goal to focus on something good for the project:
in 2022, I felt like the funding/volunteers were at a decent level and really reached out like crazy to get as many collaborations/sponsorships/interviews etc as possible.
This year, we had a very well written article made for us on:
https://cointelegraph.com/news/pennsylvania-pharmacist-feeds-thousands-of-homeless-using-crypto
we also had 2 podcast interviews (misfit heroes and the room of lives podcasts)
I had an in person interview with alumni relations from my school (Temple University)
and we received sponsorship from:
dreamhost, keepassium, strongbox, microsoft (via tech soup)
For 2023, I think that one of the biggest challenges that I would like to tackle is finding volunteers for online work. So far, finding volunteers for the organization has taken a massive effort in general - and having people do it consistently is even harder. Most volunteers choose to participate 1-3 times - but adding actual members to the team for various things we need online is going to be a top priority.
Our site is cryptoforthehomeless.com (currently up but we are migrating to our new host so it may see some instability in the next 72 hours).
I'd love to hear any and all criticism/feedback so that we can make this a better project!
