here's a "why don't we just". I did some searching and while there's a bit of discussion, I'm not seeing any consesnsus on it, or any reason why we can't/shouldn't do it.
We could give a portion of the block reward to people who run full nodes. they're taking on an expense, smaller than mining/staking, so they should be paid less. but if they're paid even a nominal fee, i think you'll see tons of nodes popping up. mining/staking is done down to the bare edge of profitability, so I think many people who aren't running nodes now would do so.
that way, you don't have to slow down the whole network to a crawl just to save a small fee. if we know people are highly incentivised to run nodes, we can turn up the requirements. maybe not to solana level, but definitely higher than it is now.
this seems like such an obvious solution, in a system with so many arbitrary rules, why not add 1 more in?
