An organized group steals 80 GB of private data from the platform and demands a payment of 4.5 million dollars

For a few weeks, Reddit has experienced a real earthquake. As reported by colleagues from the French portal JeuxVideo, the BlackCat group managed to steal all its relevant information from Reddit. Thus, at the moment the organization has access to an 80 GB database that contains the source code, confidential documents and other types of important elements. For this reason, BlackCat has demanded a payment of $4.5 million from Reddit for not sharing the information. Most importantly, however, the organization also asked those responsible to reverse their decision to implement payment APIs, a point that shows how outraged the Reddit community is.

Surprisingly, the group managed to get away with it and, in the same way that they already did with Bandai Namco and several health establishments, they gained access to the Reddit database. Therefore, they demand a million-dollar payment and the withdrawal of the payment APIs, two conditions that Reddit does not seem willing to assume.

With the future IPO of the platform, saying goodbye to the decision to turn APIs into payment tools seems like a very distant possibility. Regarding the payment of 4.5 million dollars, not much information has been released either and it is unknown if Reddit will give in to the blackmail of this group of organized hackers. Be that as it may, the discontent with the new course of the company is such that, even when it suffers a computer attack, the authors implore it to return everything to the way it was before.
