Do L2 chains have any native ETH or is it all bridged?

Not sure if I'm asking this question correctly but here goes:

If we think of an L2 network such as optimism, is all of the ETH that exists on it bridged? As in did optimism start as an "empty" chain, and then gradually as people locked more ETH onto L1, did we start getting more and more opETH? Same as let's say USDC?

What I'm trying to understand is that some bridges will advertise themselves as being able to transfer native assets. Where have those native assets come from? They must have been bridged by a lock and mint (or similar mechanism) at some point?
