Domain question

I think I created a domain with IPFS (noob here) and I wanted to use a readable name like what unstoppable domain or ethereum name service does but their services are quite expensive. Is there some way of doing this for free, maybe with code or something similar? What’s the point of these domains then if in the end, I have to pay even more to have something readable? Maybe I’m missing something, can someone explain me, please
