That's what my father said to me the first time I got into crypto. I threw in 1000 dollars (that's like 3 months wage) and said fuck it, bought some BTC, ETH, XMR, LTC & XLM. I'm going to compare that to the stocks my father recommended me to buy: META, AMAZON, NETFLIX, APPLE, TESLA, MERCADOLIBRE (we are from Argentina and it's the biggest company here).
Performance in 2022, sorted by % decrease:
- 26.83% APPLE
- 35.59% XMR
- 37.24% MERCADOLIBRE
- 41.22% META
- 49.62% AMAZON
- 51.05% NETFLIX
- 52.06% LTC
- 64.21% BTC
- 65.03% TESLA
- 67.50 % ETH
So yeah, this year I would have lost a little less if I had bought stocks as he said. But is the difference that big? Plus, I believe that when the bull market comes I have a much more higher chance of getting higher returns on my crypto than my hypothetical stock portfolio.
Plus in my country we have 80% inflation and you are taxed based on nominal gains in our currency and not gains in dollars. So even though the price of an asset may remain the same in dollars (say BTC starts and end the year at 16.500) the price in our currency went up by 80% and that's taxable (bullshit). Plus, you get no tax write off for losses.
So yeah, that's why I basically prefered to invest in crypto rather than stocks. And even though it has been a shitty year for crypto we must remember that it's a fucking global recession with many of the world titans falling at BTC holding strong at 16.5k is something nobody would have imagined.
