EIP-7702 is now part of Pectra, replacing EIP-3074. Let’s delve into what this means for the Ethereum community! Over a month ago Vitalik Buterin presented EIP 7702, set EOA account code for one transaction. EIP 7702 was presented by Buterin as an alternative to EIP 3074 and is aimed at expanding the functionality of externally owned accounts (EOAs), which are the type of accounts on Ethereum that are controlled by users rather than smart contract code. This move signifies a critical step towards enhancing Ethereum’s transaction capabilities and account abstraction. That promises EOAs can become more flexible to use by supporting native account abstraction (AA). A new transaction type that is introduced in EIP 7702 can improve wallet UX by adding functionality improvements to EOAs, such as: Transaction Batching: allowing multiple operations from the same user in one atomic transaction, that can significantly enchance user experience. Transaction Sponsorship: allowing another Ethereum account to pay for the gas fees necessary to send a transaction from an EOA Privilege de-escalation: users can sign sub-keys, and give them specific permissions that are much weaker than global access to the account. Initially, protocol developers agreed to include EIP-3074, which supports transaction batching and sponsorship, in Pectra. However, wallet developers raised concerns about the security of user accounts under EIP-3074 during an All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) call. Following discussions in a breakout meeting, there was positive sentiment among all stakeholder groups for replacing EIP-3074 with Buterin’s EIP-7702 proposal. There are also some concerns about the cost-effectiveness of the new transaction types for EOAs, as the pricing modeling is unknown. Despite some issues with EIP-7702's specifications that developers are still ironing out in separate breakout room meetings, there is hope that EIP-7702 will be successfully integrated into the devnet. https://x.com/christine_dkim/status/1798795891568222489 EIP-7702 holds significant potential to advance smart contract wallet adoption, which could substantially transform the Ethereum ecosystem.
