ethdcrminer64 and thorg

I wanted to get into mining and I found this program called Thorg (through the Golem network). Upon installation it told me I had to let EthDcrMiner64.exe through my firewall. At first I was thinking okay that makes sense, the mining executable needs to run, but I was having problems letting it through antivirus so I googled a solution. I saw there have been a few reports that this particular program has been used by cryminals to mine ETH via your machine for themselves. Is this true or is this just a certain case of use, but not true of all cases with this executable? Gut tells me to walk away, but figured I'd ask here.
