I often encounter confusion over how karma/MOONs are earned, so I've clarified the rules below.

Current Rules:

1. 100% bonus karma for comments

e.g.: Posts with 25 upvotes = 24 karma (excluding the automatic self up-vote)

Comments with 25 upvotes = 48 karma.

2. 20% bonus karma for HODLers

Any user who holds the MOONs they gained from the previous distribution will receive a 20% bonus - applied to the monthly karma earned toward the next round i.e.:

Let's imagine in June, you received 600 MOONs - giving you a total of 850 (because you earned some in May too).

Originally, to qualify for the 20% bonus in the following month - July - you needed to maintain a vault MOON balance of at least 600 MOONs i.e. you could move or spend 250 MOONs. You are now, however, allowed to tip up to 100 MOONs without losing the 20% bonus.

To emphasise: the 20% bonus is applied to the karma earned within the round i.e. if you earned 5000 karma, you will receive MOONs based on 5000*1.2 = 6000 karma. It does not apply to MOONs you already hold. When the distribution spreadsheet is posted each month, all bonuses are already included.

3. 5% bonus karma for voters

Any user who participates in governance (i.e. votes in at least one poll) will receive a 5% bonus - applied to the karma earned within the round (as above). Governance polls are posted during MOON week - the week following the snapshot. Check the dates here: Link

4. 1k karma limit

The maximum karma that can be earned (when considering MOONs) from any single post or comment is 1000.

5. Posts using the COMEDY or MEDIA flair earn 90% less karma

e.g.: a COMEDY or MEDIA post with 1000 upvotes = 99 karma. This does not apply to the comments within. There is a further cap of 500 MOONs per post. So a COMEDY or MEDIA post with 20,000 upvotes = 500 MOONs, not 1k as with other flairs.

6. Monthly limit of 15k Karma

The maximum amount of karma considered for MOONs is 15k within any given round.

Upcoming Rules:

1. No karma for removed posts or comments

Karma earned from posts or comments removed by moderators will be disqualified and not considered for MOONs. Posts or comments are removed when rules are broken e.g.: if you've posted more than 3 times in 24h. Please review the community rules here: Link

Note 1: this does not apply to comments made within removed posts. Those will still receive karma/MOONs, so long as they were not also removed.

Note 2: this does not apply to comments or posts you, yourself, have deleted.

It has not yet been confirmed when this rule will be activated, but it'll likely apply to Round 17 i.e.: it's retroactively applied now and will apply to all content from Aug 4th onward.
