Factcheck : no, SpiceDAO didn't believe it acquired the rights to Dune by buying a rare copy of the book and turning it into a NFT

People hate NFTs so much that they are willing to believe any story that fits their narrative, however ridiculous it sounds.

Today, one of the most upvoted post on Reddit is a story from a clickbait "science" website pretending that SpiceDAO, organized around purchasing a rare copy of the book Dune, forked over $3 millions for the item, believing they were acquiring the rights to the intellectual property. "Haha, those people are so dumb!", says pretty much everyone on the comments.

But here is the thing : this is a fake news. It's not true. It's not a "'rare copy of the book", and the SpiceDAO didn't believe they acquired the intellectual property.

Anyone with half a brain could have debunked this headline in a few minutes. It took me around thirty seconds to found this interview with the guy leading the effort. His objective was to "hold frequent IRL viewings where enthusiasts can see it for themselves". Why would people be interested in viewing a book? Because it's not the original book from Frank Herbert : it's a luxurious volume created by director Alejandro Jodorowsky detailing the screenplay, illustrations, and designs in what he referred to as a “director’s bible” of an eventual movie, as explained by Buzzfeed News.

This director's bible has been hidden from the public for decades, and the SpiceDAO simply wants to let the public discover it. That's it.

But you will find none of this information on the article gaining traction elsewhere on Reddit right now. People don't want to hear the truth : they want to be reassured that everyone but them are stupid. So they swallow every lie that fits their narrative, such as this one. Normies hate NFTs, there is a funny (but untrue) story about NFTs owners being dumb, so they upvote and have a good laugh. But they are wrong.

I know, even on this sub, NFTs don't have a good reputation. I get it. But it's not a reason to spew out fake news. DYOR.
