FTX is big. But it's not the first or last scam - a drive down scam memory lane.

Crypto has survived a lot of scams over the years. They are harmful, but not the end of crypto (like the media makes it out to be whenever one happens...). It is a serious issue though and I believe (the good type of) regulation is absolutely needed for it to reach mass adoption.

Most people know the recent scams over the summer or the many Twitter / social media "crypt parties" or the famous ones years back like MtGox but let's not forget that there were many others unfortunately. Here are 10 semi-famous big scams, which aren't mentioned often nowadays. Let's learn from it to spot them easier in the future!

1. OneCoin: OneCoin was a Ponzi scheme that promised high returns on investments in a new cryptocurrency. In reality, OneCoin had no real value and was used to defraud investors out of millions of dollars.
2. BitConnect: BitConnect was a cryptocurrency investment platform that promised investors returns of up to 40% per month. However, it was later revealed to be a Ponzi scheme, and the company's assets were seized by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
3. PlusToken: PlusToken was a cryptocurrency investment platform that promised investors returns of up to 18% per month. However, it was later revealed to be a Ponzi scheme, and the company's assets were seized by Chinese authorities.
4. PonziCoin: I know I shouldn't but this one makes me laugh a bit - what a great name. But I guess greed can make people act REALLY unreasonable. PonziCoin was a cryptocurrency investment platform that promised investors returns of up to 50% per month. However, it was later revealed to be a Ponzi scheme, and the company's assets were seized by the US SEC.
5. WEX: WEX was a cryptocurrency exchange that promised low fees and fast transaction times. However, it was later revealed that the exchange was a scam, and the company's assets were seized by US authorities.
6. Bitfinex: The whole Tether thing basically. One topic here is that Bitfinex (a cryptocurrency exchange) was accused of using customer funds to cover up a $850 million loss. The company has since been sued by the New York Attorney General's office.
7. Cryptocurrency Cloud Mining Scams: There have been numerous instances of cryptocurrency cloud mining scams, where companies promise to provide mining services for a fee, but never actually provide the promised services.
8. ICO Scams: Initial coin offerings (ICOs) are a way for companies to raise funds by selling tokens or cryptocurrencies. However, many ICOs have been scams, with the companies behind them never intending to actually develop a product or service. 2017 was wild in this regards; I was one of the lucky few who made it out of Confido before it got rug-pulled.
9. My Big Coin: My Big Coin was a cryptocurrency scam that promised investors returns of up to 20% per month. However, it was later revealed to be a Ponzi scheme, and the company's assets were seized by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
10. Crypto Asset Management: Crypto Asset Management was a cryptocurrency investment firm that promised investors returns of up to 15% per month. However, it was later revealed to be a Ponzi scheme, and the company's assets were seized by the US SEC.

Also: If you ever fell for a scam, don't be too hard on yourself. They pray on people who are tired, exhausted and combine it with catering to basic human needs and psychology. Try to learn from it and move on, it's not your fault but the scammer's.
