There are plenty of stories about those unlucky guys selling too early, buying pizzas, or losing all their crypto holdings. But I've never heard about this story, how WIRED willingly dumped their mined Bitcoins because they thought they were worthless and abstract.
In their article, they mentioned: 'But in the end, the answer was obvious. The world's most popular digital currency really is nothing more than an abstraction. So, we're destroying the private key used by our Bitcoin wallet. That leaves our growing pile of Bitcoin lucre locked away in a digital vault for all eternity β or at least until someone cracks the SHA-256 encryption that secures it.'
At that time, they mined exactly 13.347 BTC, which is now worth around $370,000. They also made an update on this whole situation, where they talk about the mistake they made.
I guess all we can do about it now is simply say thank you to them for reducing the total circulating supply of BTC for us.
