Guide: Web 3, what is it?

All Cryptocurrencies

So before we get too deep into it, web 3 is a term that was thrown around even before BTC existed. Every so often, there has been a push for a new web. One that is better. The current decentralized web 3 is the newest and is the one I'm talking about. It's hard to say if it will be mainstream one day.

Currently most web 3 sites are hybrid where they aren't pure decentralized, or they have decentralized features built on top of a web 2 site.

Domains:

Domains in web 3 can be used for multiple things unlike a normal .com web 2 domain. Domains can be used for

  • Your identity in the web 3 world
  • A place to send your crypto. For example, instead of having to remember a long crypto address. You can send your crypto address to the given domain that is properly setup. This making it where you just need to remember the domain and not the long address.
  • Trading like normal .com domains. Like people heavily buy to sell them like normal .com ones. Note this isn't recommended.
  • Normal website stuff. Note you can do a redirect to a web 2 site.

There is 2 types of domains in web 3.

  • NFT domains. This type are normally sold through something like unstoppable domains. These domains you own for life and there is no subscription or anything to keep them up.
  • ENS/rent. This you don't "own" it. You are renting it and when it expires you lose access to it.

It should be noted the currently most "web 3" stuff uses web 2 domains. Most browsers don't support web 3 domains yet.

Website hosting:

Many pure web 3 sites are hosted on IPFS "InterPlanetary File System". It should be noted that this isn't as plug and play like normal hosting, and depending on the site there could be a cost. But if the site is static or mostly static and isn't large. It is a free solution. And even if the site is large, the cost on it could be far lower than the normal method over time. There is ways to get a dynamic site like a news site to work. But again it isn't as plug and play as a normal site. At least right now, and this directly has to deal with how new this tech is.

Note some also use other things like Filecoin, Sia, and so on. It might be worth keeping an eye on their crypto as web 3 becomes more popular.

Problems with current web 3:

There is no good web 3 search service. Like Google doesn't lets you search for web 3 sites, and places like Unstoppable Domains said they aren't working on this. There is some web 3 search sites, but most don't know about them and they aren't a Google.

This IMO is a major problem and hold back in web 3, and why I think most web 3 applications don't use web 3 domains. Like they can use the normal system and layer decentralization on top of it, and get more traffic vs if they were a pure web 3 site.

I don't think there is a way around this until Google takes this seriously, until someone makes a good indexing service, or something like Unstoppable Domains takes this problem seriously.
