Have you ever wondered why some coins and tokens have such weird names and where they come from? I did some research on the names of the top 25 cryptos.

All Cryptocurrencies

Have you ever wondered why, like, Polkadot is called Polkadot? Or why Dai is called Dai? I have, for various currencies, but I recently realized that I didn't know the meaning or origin of many names. I had half an hour of time, so I decided to do some googling and find out for the top 25. Some are obvious, and for some I didn't succeed - so if you know the origin of the name of any of those I missed comment it down below and I'll edit it in! (If any lower ranked coins have cool origin stories I'll edit them in as well) Here's what I found:

  1. Bitcoin: easy. Compound of 'bit' and 'coin'
  2. Ethereum: Vitalik chose it after browsing a list of list of elements from science fiction on Wikipedia and liked Ether because " [it] sounded nice and it had the word 'ether', referring to the hypothetial invisible medium that permeates the universe and allows light to travel"
  3. Binance Coin: It's Binance's native coin. Yeah.
  4. Tether: "it’s tethered, or tied, to USD" (thanks u/JizzProductionUnit)
  5. Solana: is "a nod to a small beach town North of San Diego called Solana Beach, where [the founders] lived and surfed for three years
  6. USD Coin: a coin pegged to USD.
  7. Cardano: they love to name different parts of the project (also parts of the roadmap etc.) after famous personalities, in this case Italian polymath Gerolamo Cardano
  8. Ripple: couldn't find anything - the company that later made Ripple/XRP was originally called Ripplepay, but not sure where that comes from
  9. Terra: couldn't find anything, possibly named after the proposed world currency Terra?)
  10. Polkadot: Gavin Wood settled on it "because that’s a pattern with no beginning or end, feeding into the idea of decentralized applications - a pattern with no center."
  11. Dogecoin: named after the meme Doge. Much wow.
  12. Avalanche: not 100% sure, it's built on a consensus protocal called Snowflake, so I guess that's just a play on it?
  13. Shiba Inu: named after a dog breed (the one the Doge-dog is)
  14. Polygon: couldn't find anything
  15. Binance USD: do I need to explain?
  16. Chainlink: while I couldn't find anything specifically talking about the name, Chainlink links blockchains and off-chain environments. So I guess it's just named after what it does.
  17. Near: named after the science fiction novel "The Singularity Is Near"
  18. Crypto.com Coin: yes.
  19. Wrapped Bitcoin: It's Bitcoin, but wrapped
  20. Cosmos: couldn't find anything
  21. TerraUSD: the USD-pegged stablecoin by Terra
  22. Litecoin: designed as a "lite version" of Bitcoin
  23. Dai: seemingly named after the chinese 貸, meaning to lend or to provide capital for a loan. 貸 is spelled dài in latin letters.
  24. Algorand: fun fact: for a long time, I thought it was "algorithmic Rand", Rand being the South African currency - you know, like Bitcoin, a compount of "something computer" and "something money". But nope: "algorithmic randomness".
  25. Uniswap: was originally going to be called Unipeg (a mixture between a Unicorn and a Pegasus), but seemingly Vitalik Buterin told the founders "Unipeg? It sounds more like a Uniswap"
