How the validating node is chosen

So I’ll admit to being not well versed in how POS works. I have a question about it and I apologize if this has been addressed before or if my understanding is wrong.

My understanding is that a node is chosen “at random” to validate the next block. The randomness seems suspect to me. From what I could find online it seems the choice is based on an algorithm that rates nodes by the amount of ETH staked and how long it has been staked for.

If it’s based on an algorithm doesn’t that mean we could predict exactly which node is going to be the next one to validate? Or am I missing something?
