Preface: Not your keys, not your coins. Self-custody is the way. But with self-custody comes greater responsibilty. This post is for those who take security seriously.
If you are using or about to use cold storage, you must have thought about storing your seed phrase securely. There are a bunch of valid alternatives: metal plates in a bank deposit box or in a hidden location will work for most.
How about adding one more layer of redundancy? Memorize your seed phrase so you are guaranteed to have access to your coins even if you find yourself in a different country with no way of getting to you local bank or nana's false teeth jar!
I thought it was impossible for me to memorize 24 words! Come on, my memory so bad I struggle inputting 6 2fa digits all at once! Then shit happened. Without much detail, I couldn't rely on metal plates, because I didn't know if I could ever return to my home. I couldn't rely on carrying a seed phrase with me because I could get robbed of all I carry on a dangerous way.
So I had to become inventive. And I memorized my 24 word seed phrase in under 30 minutes. I still remember it 5 month later, and I'm sure I will remember it until Alzheimer or something.
For this memory trick, you'll need a piece of paper and a pen. Try to come up with an image that would combine 2 or 3 successive words, and then draw this image. Some words will take a separate drawing. That's OK. The drawing doesn't have to be good, what matters is a strong association. It would be best if you make it personalized to your experience/memories.
You'll end up with 10-15 weird doodles so bizarre and personalized that no one on earth could decipher it but you.
Then look at those images and repeat the words strengthening the assossiations.
Then try to recall the whole paper with the images (also things like the position of each image in a row, number of images in a row) in your memory. From that mental image, try to recall the words.
Practice, go back to the previous step if you struggle at first.
And just like that, you have your seed phrase in your memory.
In no way is this the safest or only way to store your seed! Make sure there are multiple layers of redundancy. And make sure your close ones know how to and can access your coins in the case something happens to you.
All in all, it is worth remembering the seed to your most precious holdings. Hope you found it useful.
