why would anyone buy this useless crap

Cries the internet warrior, mad that Ubisoft and other companies (ex GameStop) are investing in the trend. Surely, these companies are just here to wring the last pennies out of poor gamers, right? NFTs are just speculation on JPEGs, right? Shitting on NFTs right now is a great way to get your random blog to the front page

What gamers seem to urgently miss, is that the NFT model has already been dominant for quite a long time. Look at how Roblox, one of the most valuable game companies on the planet, works. Players can make their own items and adventures, and sell them to others. Roblox is a database version of a metaverse. Other prominent examples include trading players in sports games, and Valve's workshop system - where, again, players can buy and sell game items. Second Life, etc

But here are the brave keyboard bangers once again claiming that NFTs are evil — it's all about money laundry!

Explain to me how it's worse for consumers, when markets become open? Instead of being at the mercy of Roblox's marketplace, we have open markets and open standards. Instead of being locked into a game economy, you could trade your digital property between games

And if course none of this even touches how NFTs are being used outside of gaming - Uniswap v3, ENS - and the future of deeds and legal ownership

NFTs are an invention on par with fungible cryptocurrencies — they are super valuable to the world.
