is it possible for a transaction to stall out and never go through?

I sent some btc from my ledger wallet to coinbase on May 5th and lowered the fee down to .0000142 or approximately 40 cents. This is when everyone was posting about network congestion.

Logged in several days later and nothing. "View in explorer" worked at this time. I thought it said something like 504 blocks but dont quote me on that, I dont have a screenshot.

Regardless, that is roughly 3 to 4 days if my understanding that a block takes approximately 10 minutes. A week later and nothing.

Logged back in today a month later and still unconfirmed. I click on the "view in explorer" link and it says Transaction not found.

Can someone explain like I am 5?
