Is Tether launching its own wallet a bigger shift than people think?

What stands out here is not the wallet itself. It’s what it says about where Tether is moving.

For years, USDT has mostly lived in the background as infrastructure. People used it through exchanges, apps, and other platforms. Now Tether is pushing directly into the consumer layer with its own self-custodial wallet, supporting USDT, USAT, XAUT, and bitcoin across multiple networks, while removing the usual gas-token friction and simplifying addresses.

That makes this feel bigger than a normal wallet launch.

This looks more like vertical integration. Tether already controls the dominant stablecoin. Now it wants to control more of the holding, sending, and payment experience around it too. As of April 14, the article says USDT had about $184.7 billion in circulation and roughly 58% of the stablecoin market, which gives Tether a distribution advantage most wallet competitors simply do not have.

There’s a bullish case and a skeptical one.

The bullish case is obvious. A self-custodial wallet with human-readable addresses and fees paid in the asset itself could make stablecoin payments, savings, and transfers much easier for normal users, especially outside the usual crypto-native crowd.

The skeptical case is also obvious. This gives even more power to one company that already sits at the center of a huge part of crypto liquidity. And even with the KPMG audit process now underway, Tether is still one of those names the market never fully agrees on.

So the real question is simple:

Does this actually make crypto more usable for normal people, or does it just make Tether even harder to compete with?
