It's not possible to replace Bitcoin. It's unique and scarce. Miners don't control it and can't force a new version of it.

I often hear this from crypto people, skeptics or sometimes even Bitcoiners. Miners will supposedly run out of money because the block rewards decline so they will all get together and conspire to create a new forked bitcoin version with unlimited supply and mine only that new Bitcoin.

Others will assert that Bitcoin isn't scarce because you can create a copy of it that works equally well.

That's not how it works at all and I hope the following analogy will clarify that.

Can you fork New York City? Sound stupid but yes you can. You can buy wasteland and call it New York City.

Miners forcing a fork would be like wealthy NYC investors and businesses threatening to leave the city and invest in the wasteland New York instead.

How would that work out? Other investors and businesses will happily replace the businesses that leave and no person will want to leave the real New York.

They can keep burning cash to promote and invest in wasteland New York but that won't make it popular. No one will think of wasteland New York as the real New York and no one will pay premium prices for it's real estate.

Unless you can convince the entire population of New York to move to the fake New York you won't be successful.

The price of a Bitcoin fork will be set by the market not by miners and no one is going to pay more for a new Bitcoin than the original one.

The new Bitcoin won't have users, supporters, apps, banks and other financial institutions connected to it. It will be wasteland. No one will pay premium prices for it. Miners would invest a lot of resources and money to mine a worthless coin that no one wants.

Sounds like a pretty stupid strategy.

So it doesn't matter if there is a Blackrock fork, a federal reserve fork, a miner fork, a government fork, a greenpeace fork because no one will pay much for a coin without a track record or users.

Without money it will just trend towards zero against BTC and make the real BTC even stronger.

No one us going to be able to brainwash hundreds of millions that their Bitcoin isn't the real one and no one is going to buy that story. It's already too late and it will just get harder with each year.
