Lost keys

Newer to crypto and completely uneducated I have some Satoshi but have question about wallets. Have a freind who many years ago had 60 bitcoin, but lost the keys to his wallet. Is there really no way to recover? It has put him over the last few years into a deep depression. It really has effected his life in every way. Sad really. In this day in age is there no options. I would have assumed he would have figured out by now if there was.
