What you need to know about the IRL NFT treasure hunt by MoonPay and Universal
Guess what? Crypto payment service provider MoonPay has partnered with Universal Studios to launch an NFT-based scavenger hunt at Universal Theme Parks.
According to The Block, MoonPay will be using its minting service HyperMint to release up to 7 million NFTs, claimable at Universal Studios Florida and Universal Studios Hollywood as part of the “Halloween Horror Nights” NFT treasure hunt.
Visitors will notice QR codes at participating attractions. By scanning the codes, they’ll be able to unlock and receive digital collectibles featuring unique characters tied to Halloween Horror Nights.
Just so you know, iconic horror movie villains such as Michael Myers, Blissfield Butcher, and The Grabber are on the list this time.
“We’re really excited about this because this is a real-world use case we’ve been trying to demonstrate with people,” said MoonPay CEO Ivan Soto-Wright. “We’re going beyond just the profile picture identity movement with NFTs to actual real-world utility.”
Best part is, it takes little to no crypto knowledge to claim these NFTs. “It’s just basically a claim page where you put in your email address, and boom, what we do in the background is we mint that NFT, we spin up a wallet for that particular person and they’re able to claim it when they’re ready,” said Soto-Wright.
There are seven types of NFTs available in both the Orlando and Hollywood Universal Parks. Those who collect all seven will be rewarded with a special gold medal NFT. As to what this unique NFT does, Soto-Wright prefers to keep it a secret.
About HyperMint and Universal
To those uninitiated, HyperMint is a self-service NFT minting platform launched by Moonpay in partnership with Fox Corporation, Universal Pictures, Selfridges, Snoop Dogg’s Death Row Records, and more in June.
What it does, in essence, is to provide a service that allows brands to easily create, mint, and manage utility NFTs. In fact, companies could even mint up to 100 million digital assets at once with HyperMint.
So far, British luxury department store Selfridges has released NFTs on HyperMint to celebrate artist Victor Vasarely. In July, the platform partnered with renowned New York street artist Alec Monopoly to launch Rags to Richie, a collection of 6,500 hand-drawn NFTs.
In the future, Moonpay and HyperMint are expected to partner with more big names in the entertainment, music, and gaming industries to produce more NFTs with added utilities.
