My entire office at work started asking me about cryptocurrency this past week

This has been an interesting time for me this past week. The entire 5 years I’ve read about cryptocurrency, I’ve only ever talked about it with one co worker. Not because I was being secretive, rather because nobody would bother to listen to me ramble out this cool new technology.

It first started with one coworker downloading coin base and buying bits of each coin. This has been going on for a while and he would bring it up to me as like a “hey I bought this isn’t that cool” which didn’t surprise me as he was the most interested in tech of the old guys in the office, even if at first he didn’t care one bit about crypto many years ago. But more recently I come into work one day and for whatever reason everybody is talking about it. One guy is showing people how to buy on their phones and giving lectures on what to get. People listening intently and before the end of the day almost everybody was able to buy crypto in some way. It was so fascinating to me that basically overnight, a group of 20+ people went from not giving a crap about crypto to believing it could be the answer.

The things I’ve noted since then (both good and bad)

• it seems like what sold them on it was the inflation argument. Believing that the dollar will plummet in buying power in a short period. And hey I don’t really buy that argument per se, but if it works it works I guess.

-Explaining simple concepts to them about trading coins is a fools errand. they are the typical novices, thinking that a coin with a small price means it could skyrocket (not taking into account market cap). And they do seem to listen to any explanation that contradicts them.

-they are die hard into meme coins, believing that coins like Shiba inu are the only good investments. They also believe people are stupid for not buying ethereum classic since it is so much cheaper than ethereum.

-any actual argument in favor of the tech is lost on them. They literally only care about it replacing the dollar as a currency.

Overall I was excited as this was cation of adoption, but also disappointed that so many new investors were flailing for the same traps so many novice investors seem to fall for. I was hoping that since these people were relatively smart they would be smarter with their money.
