The usual advice when setting up a new wallet is to send a small amount to one of the addresses and then send it back out, to make sure you control the wallet.
How does this compare to just signing a message from one of the addresses in the wallet? I.e.: create some message, sign it with one adress and verify the signature on another device.
Benefits of signing a message:
-No cost
-No leak of address's public key/signature to the network
-Can check the exact address you want to use. This is not possible with test transactions, unless you are willing to reuse the address after the test transaction.
