Fun fact that I didn't really realize until recently: normies hate bitcoin.
I just saw a Coinbase-sponsored short by some comedy Youtubers, Jay and Sharon (8.7M subscribers), (https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Mu5\_4vRNwdk) and a majority of the comments were hostile about crypto. One said they've always hated that "rat scam" a bunch of others use the term "crypto bros" in a derogatory way.
Another was so roused to frustration that they went out of their way to comment for the first time: "I really liked your channel never commented. But I really hate you are promoting bitcoin. It's all fraud. Hope they paid you well."
We all might also recall a funny article recently that reported how women rank crypto as one of the most unattractive hobbies a guy can have (among anime and warhammer).
We get caught up in the crypto bubble here. We hear news about companies adopting crypto, integrating it into payments, using it for massive money transfers. We hear about presidential candidates making crypto promises to swing votes.
But there exists a whole swarm of normies outside of our bubble who seem to have jumped over indifference to sheer rage. I never realized it was so polarized.
I wonder why? Did they lose money and resent it? Get scammed in a rugpull? Or is it like veganism and crossfit, where they hate how much enthusiasts talk about it? Or have they just jumped to conclusions about something they haven't bothered to understand?
And furthermore: is this an image problem that the industry needs to address before going full mainstream?
What do you think? What are your experiences with this?
For me, I'm a bit old school and feel like NFTs, memecoins, and any quick cash grabs definitely detract from the public accepting crypto as legitimate. However, I hope that more established players in the game (i.e. Bitcoin, ETH, SOL) can outshine this narrative and show people that if this is all a bubble, a la the dot com era, then the big boys are like the Amazons and Apples of the crypto space, while the shitcoins are all those dot com IPOs that no one even remembers now. Maybe institutions and government investors will pave the way for legitimacy and leave normie-would-be-retailers in the dust.
Either way, you can spin it as: we are early.
Or: true adoption is still far, far, far away.
