BitMEX, one of the most iconic names in crypto derivatives trading, has announced that it will permanently shut down its exchange on September 23, 2026. After evaluating the company, the parent, HDR Global Trading, made that decision, which has ended over 10 years of service.

BitMEX Confirms Exchange Closure

BitMEX announced that trading will cease at 04:00 UTC on September 23 for users in a statement to them. This platform has already suspended new account registrations and is encouraging its customers to start withdrawing as early as possible.

The exchange stressed that user assets remain fully backed and under customer control throughout the transition period. The company says the early announcement was meant as a precaution for traders to close out any trades and transfer the capital before the situation becomes chaotic.

Also highlighting its security record is BitMEX, which states that there have never been any customer’s funds stolen by a hack in its entire life.

The Exchange That Changed Crypto Trading

The BitMEX exchange was launched in 2014 and gained significant influence in digital asset markets following the launch of the perpetual swap contracts offered with up to 100x leverage.

A Product That Became an Industry Standard

Perpetual futures quickly became the major commodity in crypto derivative trading and were later embraced by most of the crypto exchanges. Originally a BitMEX product that was intended for a specific few, it has since become the most actively traded digital asset on the exchange.

In its heyday, BitMEX had been one of the top choices for skilled traders looking to enter the gold trades with high leverage and liquidity. The platform helped popularize trading in cryptocurrencies among retail and institutional users and contributed to the formation of the trading landscape as it exists today.

Competition and Industry Changes Take Their Toll

BitMEX contributed to the establishment of the perpetual futures market, but competition gradually grew through the years, as bigger exchanges introduced derivative volumes. Rivals lured in liquidity through offering a variety of products, increasing user base, and ever more aggressive growth tactics.

Over the last decade, the exchange also faced a string of regulators’ issues. Several of the founders have left since legal issues involving anti-money laundering compliance (AML) have since arisen but operations have continued.

Those difficulties did not deter BitMEX, however, as they were still a familiar brand in the crypto space, and they didn’t alienate any traders.
