I got an email about this recently and I’m wondering what your thoughts are.

I’ll preface this by saying I haven’t done much investigation into the structure of the program or how it all works, such as if there’s a plan to connect the wallet to an external marketplace rather than being locked to the PSN. At face value, I’m getting VeVe vibes.

Something that’s been on my mind for a little while is the whole approach to P2E so far has seemed off to me.

Most of us by now will have seen recent reports about Decentraland and the obscenely small daily use compared to scale of project investment. And let’s be honest, the gaming produced by many of P2E platforms to date, as far as I’m aware, has been underwhelming in terms of graphics and mechanics. I’ve also seen many farm out their project token and implode shortly after.

I always thought it seemed a bit counterintuitive to enter web3 with a view of crowdsourcing funds to later deliver utility, in this case, a P2E experience.

This approach by PlayStation strikes me as the best practice approach to adopting P2E in web3. They already have the gaming infrastructure, they’ve got the user base, and they’ve got decades of iconic gaming titles to have a strong market for digital memorabilia.

In other words, they’re monetizing gaming with digital collectibles, not creating web3 gaming platforms. I think this augmentation of existing systems is a sensible means of mainstream adoption and maybe the technology will allow for fully web3-developed gaming in the future. Who knows, should this succeed, we may see PlayStation and the like spearhead this going forward.
