r/CryptoCurrency members over the years

Lately I've been wondering just how many r/CryptoCurrency members have been around since the last big bull/bear cycle (essentially I mean 2017-2018ish). It feels at times like many people in the sub are in their first long bear market and I think experiencing a full bull and bear market cycle helps put in perspective how long a bear might last.

As some of you probably know (or at least expect), the subreddit has grown pretty drastically since the last bear market. I put together this chart to put it in perspective:

Chart of r/Cryptocurrency Members based on data from (https://subredditstats.com/r/cryptocurrency) and BTC Daily Closing Price from Yahoo Finance from Sept. 2014- Present

I also added the value of BTC (in USD) since I figured this would give a good enough indicator of the market sentiments over the same time frame. When looking at the chart, I think it is also good to keep in mind that Moons were created in 2020, I think in July.

You can see that membership has gone up 5x since the start of the 2020/21 bull run, which means about 20% of people in this sub were here during the last bear cycle. It is obviously not a fair assumption that people weren't in cryptos before joining this sub, but for arguments sake, it is probably a majority of the current members that haven't been through a bear market.

The big shift also correlates with the addition of moons. Not to say a lot of the newer members are moon farmers, but I'm sure it added a whole lot of members. As a little aside, I'm sure it's also why admins got rid of the moon cap.

I suppose the take away for me is that the majority of comments and posts, and therefore the overall general sentiment of this sub, are likely coming from the perspective of someone in their first crypto winter. Not to say that means the comment or post is any more or less correct/informed/relevant, just to say, based on the numbers, that's probably the perspective it's coming from.

Anyway, figured I'd share the chart, I thought it was interesting enough. At the very least, it is probably good news for moons.

Let me know if you think that it is accurate to say a majority of the sub is in their first winter, I am interested to see what other people think about that.

Edit: added line to indicate approx date moons started per comment by u/Set1Less
