I've been hosting servers at ReliableSite for years now, always paying in Bitcoin, most recently using Lightning.
Yesterday, their payment provider BitPay indicated they wanted me to create an account with them, submit facial scans, drivers license, and other documents in order to make a trivial $80 Bitcoin payment.
It's not as though I were singled out; There's no suspicion of wrong-doing or TOS violations; I'm not even using the server for public hosting anyway, only for routine internal tasks. It's apparently a new policy that BitPay is forcing on all customers now (or at least hosting customers?). I read similar stories yesterday from others reporting the same thing.
I sent a quick ticket to ReliableSite recommending that they switch to BTCPay, which is basically a no-brainer drop-in replacement for BitPay. I'm shocked they read my ticket at all but, for those who are interested, their official response is:
Hello, All cryptocurrency payments are processed through BitPay. Additionally, we require KYC on all cryptocurrency payments. We do not accept direct cryptocurrency payments.

Needless to say, I'm canceling all services with ReliableSite ASAP. For those who find themselves in a similar position, here's a nice list that someone put together of more suitable hosting providers that accept Bitcoin, and in some cases Lightning, without all of BitPay's intrusive tactics.
