The friend from r/buttcoin was arguing with someone of ethererum sub.
Note: Don't just assume that this person from r/buttcoin doesn't know anything about tech or he couldn't buy your favt coin when it was low etc.

IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) is a distributed peer-to-peer file-sharing system and it is very much like torrents but with some important differences, for example that every file has a universal address. So instead of needing a torrent file (or magnet link) to access the file, you need to know its address. Since it is based around static addresses, you can have that the same file can belong to different folders, that also get IPFS addresses. So for example the file of the song Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd could appear in four folders: Wish You Were Here (the album), Pink Floyd Complete Discography, Pink Floyd Greatest Hits, and Songs Beginners Like to Play on Guitar.
Some NFTs point to files that are stored on IPFS. Why? Say I draw a dickbutt and then mint an NFT of said dickbutt and sell the NFT to you. The NFT is an entry in a blockchain; This entry consists of very little information: (1) Your own public key (basically your "username") , (2) a link that points to the image of this dickbutt, and (3) some technical data like the time at which the transaction was carried out. Where is the image of this dickbutt actually? Not on the blockchain where the NFT is stored, because it would be prohibitively expensive for every node in the blockchain to store every file "associated" with every NFT. The image is actually stored on either:
- A private server, in which case the NFT contains a link to a URL like
https://mynftserver.butt/bullshitSoldToMorons/dickbutt_3254.bmp
- IPFS, in which case the NFT contains a link that looks like
https://ipfs.io/ipfs/sgARVgxv6rXqVPiikMJ8u2NLgre768trhr7ARVgxv6rXqVPiikMJ8u2NLg6hrth763rb2n
This means that, if I take down my server with the image of the dickbutt, or people stop hosting my dickbutt on IPFS, you have an NFT pointing to a resource that does not exist, and you are sad.
The "solution" to this problem created by a technology that has no application is to create a third system, one of incentives, that pays people to host the image of the dickbutt I have drawn on IPFS. Think of this third system of incentives as a second blockchain, different from the one the NFT is stored on.
So what is going on in that conversation? Many crypto bros don't understand the difference between P2P file sharing systems like torrents or IPFS and blockchains... and don't understand technology and economics and law in general, and they think that all the following things are the same thing:
- The dickbutt that I have drawn.
- Legal ownership of the rights to the original drawing.
- The digital scan of the dickbutt that I have drawn.
- Legal ownership of the rights to the digital scan of the dickbutt.
- The IPFS address where the image of the dickbutt that I have drawn is.
- The NFT I have sold to you, that points to the IPFS address where the digital scan of the dickbutt that I have drawn is.
- The incentives for any IPFS nodes to host the digital scan of the dickbutt that I have drawn, and that is pointed to by the NFT that I have sold to you.
So when I told that guy that NFTs do not actually hold files, the guy had an aneurysm and brought up an incentive system for people to store the files that NFTs point to on IPFS, proving my original point but without realising it.
