Setting up my first node, questions

I have 4-5 raspi 3B’s laying around. Am I ok to use it for a node? I saw that DL’ing the blockchain can take an unreal amount of time on these 3B’s. So currently it’s being downloaded on my PC. Should be done in about a day or so. But I want to make sure it’s even possible before I spend close to a $100 on a pi4 8-16gb. The YouTube video I am watching says I need to have a couple hundred to thousand dollars in Bitcoin to open channels, would like to know if that’s true or necessary. The computer software I have right now shows I can store BTC on it as if they’re a wallet, I also assume that’s not the best option and that a cold/hardware wallet is my best option for keeping my coins off an exchange
