Should I run a binance node or a biniance smart chain node?

I'm working on an application that needs fast access to binance chain/smart chain metrics, both historical and real time. From what I've read (which has been somewhat conflicting), BNB is the native currency of binance chain, which is where all BNB transactions are processed, while binance smart chain only handles smart contracts and has a native currency which is pegged to BNB, but is an independent currency. Is my understanding correct? If so, would I be able to access binance chain metrics via a binance smart chain node or vise versa, or would I need to have both nodes to access both chains?

edit: Also, I know ethereum light nodes are a thing, but I'm having trouble figuring out if they're a thing for binance/smart chain. Ideally, I'd be able to query the network without having to download the entire blockchain.
