A new proof of concept way to mine bitcoin is being worked on, and that is by using lasers for proof of work. Bitcoin mining being power intensive have been a problem for a long time now, and produces lots of CO2 emissions across the globe. There have been many fixes suggested towards that, including to move towards a Proof of stake concensus mechanism instead of a proof of work one. Another less common idea is using a different type of PoE using lasers. This was created by Bitcoin Optech, they proposed in Jan 5 2022 a new kind of PoW called optical proof of work or oPow for short.

This will lower the entry level to bitcoin mining, and crypto in general. My first crypto I got in was Aloha DeFi , since I got free internet and crypto for my spare mobile data and that was a seamless entry for me into the crypto world. Adoption levels should get a big raise with the push of low entry level to bitcoin mining to the efforts made by all projects in the space that get new people into crypto everyday. If we got a lower entry level for bitcoin mining, we would have more people mining around the world increasing decentralization, and adoption levels. This technology isn’t even on testnet yet so plenty of testing is required, but hopefully we reach the day where bitcoin is more eco friendly.
