I know what you're thinking. I hate Ethereum Gas Fees they're the worst. But this sub completely overdramatizes the cost of fees on Ethereum. For example a top post saying to get Ether to Matic to pay for gas was going to cost $125, and a whole bunch of comments agreeing how awful and unusable Ethereum L1 and L2's are. So lets look at the cost of gas on Ethereum. The current average cost of gas is $1.54 and it's actually the highest it's been in nearly a year. If we take the historical value the average transaction fee from April 1st to April 31st it's only ~$1.12. A far cry from the supposed $125 it's going to cost to transfer Ethereum to Polygon. ----------------------------------------------------- But wait I know what you're thinking. It's actually worse, it's going to cost money to transfer ETH to another chain and then it costs money to swap WETH to matic! Yah ok. So if we use Orbiter Finance to transfer .005 ETH from mainnet to Polygon. For the transfer I need to approve a send of .0055 and I'll receive .00499 ETH on Polygon. So I'm losing .000501 ETH to fees on the tranfer of funds to Polygon. A whopping $.92 to Orbiter + gas fees to transfer funds to Polygon But gas fees are currently high and in total I'll spend about $3-$4 to swap ETH from mainnet to Polygon, again a notable difference from the supposed $125 that it's going to cost to move ETH to Polygon -------------- But wait I know what you're thinking.. We need Matic not WETH to swap that WETH for more matic on polygon. Op needs Matic, and how is he supposed to transact without it? Well he can do a cross chain swap on SushiSwap and swap mainnet ETH for Polygon Matic. He'll lose $.16 in fees to Sushi + the cost of Gas. So it'll cost him ~$3 right now. Do I need to say again, how far from reality ops claim of $125 to swap ETH tp Matic is? -------------------------------------- So then we get funds to Polygon and the average transaction fee from March 20th to April 20th is around $.05. (the orange line) https://dune.com/queries/1538703/2579555 -------------- Ethereum fees aren't the fractions of a penny that some networks offer, but it's also a not even close to the $70 average transaction fee that Ethereum L1 experienced in May 19th 2021. It's also nowhere near the $125 that Op tried to claim. So be chill, relax, and don't spread misinformation. [link] [comments] |
