In a comment thread on a separate post today we got to talking about BTC's price and how crazy it was to get 5 btc for a captcha or you could mine btc with crappy pc's back in the day. It reminded me of a story I read that maybe not everyone knows. The story of how you could once get a consolation prize for a "StarCraft: Brood war" competition of 25BTC. Charles Hoskinson tweeted it one day and it showed that places 5-8 recieved 25BTC as a consolation price. The tournament in question was called “AoV iCCup Starleague” and you can still watch the matches on their YouTube channel. In the forum thread about the tournament, the organizers announce “a prize pool over $1000.” Little did they know, those four consolation prizes of 25 Bitcoin would, right now, be worth close to 700k each. Later, in 2013, another StarCraft tournament was held but this time the price of BTC was way higher. Prizes were strictly in BTC and some sponsors were Eric Voorhees, Roger Ver AND Reddit donations. Total prizepool as 14,6 BTC at a BTC price of around $600. [link] [comments] |
