The amount of solar radiation absorbed by the Earth in one day (24 hours) is equivalent to running the Bitcoin network for 44 thousand years at the current hash rate.

The Earth receives 174 petawatts (PW) of incoming solar radiation and approximately 70% is absorbed by clouds, oceans and land masses. A total of (174e15*0.7)*(24*60*60) = 1.05e22 Joules of solar radiation is absorbed in one day.

Currently, the average Bitcoin hash rate is 220 EH/s (220e18 H/s). If the S19 miner has an average power efficiency of 34.5 J/TH (3.45e-11 J/H), the total energy consumed by the network will be equal to (3.45e-11*220e18) = 7.59e9 J/s. The network will consume a total of 6.56e14 Joules per day.

Therefore, the total solar radiation absorbed by the Earth in one day (24 hours) is equal to running the bitcoin network (at the current hash rate) for 1.05e22/6.56e14 = 16,047,430 days, or (16,047,430/365) = 43,965 years.

Edit:

Some have pointed out that this comparison is misleading. I know it's impossible to extract all the solar energy to power the bitcoin network. However, this was not the message I was trying to convey. I was trying to point out the enormous amount of solar energy our planet is capable of absorbing. The energy usage of the Bitcoin network is often compared to the energy usage of entire nations. A more appropriate comparison is to compare the energy usage of the Bitcoin network to the total amount of energy absorbed by the entire planet. Some will argue that the Bitcoin network does not contribute towards absorbing solar energy from the Sun, but instead adds additional energy to the system. Yes, this is true, but this additional energy is 16 million times less than the solar energy absorbed by the planet.

I think the most appropriate comparison would be to compare the amount of net CO2 produced by the Bitcoin network and compare it to the amount of CO2 produced/absorbed by all lifeforms on this planet. Then we will have to look at the total amount CO2 already in the atmosphere and compare it to the additional CO2 produced by the Bitcoin network. This additional CO2 will result in a logarithmic increase in the IR absorption rate of the atmosphere. I don't have all the numbers, but it would be interesting to know the logarithmic increase in the atmosphere's IR absorption rate, as a result of the additional CO2 produced by the Bitcoin network.
