The best part about investing is that what we consider to be speculative assets, like crypto, can change over time - all major innovations are speculative to begin with.

I’ve seen a lot of rhetoric, in this bearish time fuelled by a slight breeze of panic, regarding crypto being a giant ponzi, an empty investment, nothing but speculation, and essentially worthless.

Crypto is certainly speculative. However, major innovations are speculative by nature; no one realises their potential until it is well in the midst of realisation.

People laughed at Jeff Bezos and Amazon; shops existed after all and delivery took too long.

Bill Gates was ridiculed on live talk back TV for discussing the internet; it seemed like a stupid and unnecessary tech development. Gates said we could read the news via the net, the host pulled out the newspaper and said he already had it - the audience laughed.

MySpace (for those old enough to remember it, otherwise think precursor to Facebook) was for kids to have a place of their own online, though it was rudimentary at best. Social media is now one of the world’s most powerful concepts and business models, bringing in billions of dollars and creating more influence than ever.

One day, blockchain technology might rise to become something more than the jpegs and shit coins that surround it now. It is a truly remarkable technology, and in its infancy of a decade it has already made a dent on one of the largest and most instilled institutions in the world - finance.

All of these innovations took time, years and decades of development to become dominant. Apple made some crap before they busted out the hardware model, and the iPhone eventually arrived and become a centrepiece revolution.

Crypto needs time to grow. But the fact of the matter is, it has disrupted finance and forced itself onto the stage globally already, in just 10 years none the less. Anyone happy to ignore it and write it off in the long run is likely the same kind of person that laughed at Bill explaining the internet.

I for one will be watching it closely, bull or bear market.
