As some may know, there was a Starcraft Tournament in 2011 with the following prize pool: This is getting posted as a meme from time to time and most people have seen it already. For context: At that time 25 BTC were worth approximately 40$. But I asked myself two things: Is this true, and if yes, did anyone of these four "lucky losers" keep their BTC until it was worth anything? Yes, this tournement actually happened, it was played in Starcraft Broodwar. The winners of the above tournament But what about the real winners in the 5th to 8th place? They were known pro gamers at that time, so we can actually find out what most of them did from the Team Liquid Forum: Looks like Sziky never claimed his Bitcoins, he agreed for a equivalent fiat payment instead. Jumper and Hejek never claimed their prize at all - their BTC are either lost or gone back to the sponsor. The only one I couldn't find an answer about was Koll (or Kolll). It looks like he ended his Starcraft career in 2012. So while there is a chance, it's also very unlikely he claimed or kept his prize. If you are wondering, no; the BTC price wasn't high enough in 2012 for retirement with 25 BTC. The ATH of BTC in this year was just a little over 26$ So what do we learn from this? Many people regret not getting into crypto early. But the truth is, even those who stumbled into it somehow, were often not aware of the potential and either lost or spend their Coins early. ~ Some Sources: Team Liquid Forum Post 1 ~ tl;dr: The story is real, but it looks like none of them claimed their coins. We require more minerals. [link] [comments] |
