I had a corporate security training on cyber crime and I wanted to share some takeaways. While we all know, we should be careful, we do not Always realise how dangerous can be an external device.
- Ethernet adapters, if you have to buy one online ebay or somthing , do not use them on devices where you have funds especially when they are unbranded. Some smart folks may well elaborate a scam which involves conventional buying.
- USBs especially if unbranded. Never ever ever use a used USB device, and off course if you find one on the streets, this should be a total Big No-no for you!
- All sort of splitter and anything that goes into your machines in general should be treated as a potential hack risk.
- External charrgers? Don't be so sure. You may go a coffee shop which offers your charging your phone, make sure you are in a place with a fair reputation. You never know what's behind the wall. You may think, well, they will never do that, but think again, because if they do, how are you going to catch them?
I know some of this sound extra-cautious, but if you have some decent data or electronic funds on your device especially Bitcoin wallets, Edge, Electrums etc... be extra careful. Not once people complained here about funds being stolen although they did everything right, but guess what. It might have been an Ethernet splitter your bought online , sent over from abroad, a company abc which you will never catch, and boom!
