There is some great advice in this space - a couple anecdotes

All Cryptocurrencies

On r/CryptoCurrency there are several phrases and pieces of advice that are commonplace here: DCA and HODL, buy the rumor sell the news, not your keys not your crypto, sunken cost fallacy, don't invest more than you can afford to lose, etc. At this point I wonder if there's been any TA on the most cited phrases here or someone who has compiled a "golden rules of crypto". I wanted to highlight a couple of examples where I went against my emotions and followed this advice:

  1. Buy the rumor, sell the news: I have seen numerous examples of this but never had a legitimate situation I've been involved with and been in the right emotional state to execute. Enter the XRP case. I bought a few years ago and after Coinbase delisted it and Ripple got sued, I decided to hold as it XRP didn't seem like a security. I told myself I'd "buy" or rather, hold, the rumors of Ripple winning the case and if they won, then selling the "news" and unloading XRP. I didn't sell exactly at the peak but got out around $0.78. No way I do this unless I saw/heard of so many examples of buy the rumor, sell the news here.
  2. Sunken Cost Fallacy: In the last bullrun I got caught up in ALGO and held that as my second biggest bag. Buying so much ALGO at the top was one of my worst decisions ever, as my average buy in price was around $1.65. ALGO was so easy to use and transact with, there were "blossoming" partnerships in the work (yea especially FIFA /s), I thought it was destined for success and held. Once I learned more and watched it crash in the bear market I had to give it a hard look. Taking emotions out of the game, from this point on, which crypto will perform better- BTC or ALGO? I think BTC would. I sold my entire bag of ALGO at $0.23 to realize an 84% loss in April and converted it to BTC. It was devastating. However, since that point ALGO's price decreased from $0.23 to $.09 (-61%), while BTC decreased from $28475 to $25824 (-9%). Exiting my position avoided considerable future losses.

I just wanted to highlight a couple examples where taking your emotions out of some of the decision making and adhering to some of the general tenents discussed frequently here can prove fruitful. There are other examples where I followed some of the advice here and it worked out and also didn't work out so this is not financial advice. An example of where I didn't follow the advice was buying a shitcoin in the peak bear, watching it 5x in 1 week, screenshoting the top, then watching everyone exit while I hold the bag on an -89% loss.

I am trying to take the advice I have here and turn it into long term gains and staying in this space has been very helpful as I try to look long term. My current plans are to DCA and HODL the blue chips. I understand I won't necessarily moon like I can with altcoins, but I know sticking to BTC and ETH are some of my best chances for reliable long-term gains if I keep my goals simple.

I hope you all take some of the advice here and turn it into positive returns for you and curious if others have anecdotes where the advice paid off.
